Donor Advised Fund

A Donor Advised Fund (DAF) is a flexible charitable giving account designed to support the nonprofits and causes that matter most to you.

Support every nonprofit you love through one charitable giving account.

A DAF let's you give flexibly year-round while taking advantage of immediate tax benefits.

DAFs are ideal for individuals and families who:

  • Enjoy making donations to local and national charities they care about.
  • Want to simplify their giving through a single, central account—eliminating the need to track multiple tax receipts or manage separate accounts.
  • Maximize tax benefits using a strategy that offers an immediate tax deduction on contributions while allowing the fund's assets to grow tax-free over time.
  • Connect with our team to discover and learn more about nonprofits making a difference across the South Sound.
  • Seek a simpler alternative to a private foundation.
  • Involve children or family members in meaningful, ongoing conversations about philanthropy.
  • Build a lasting legacy by naming successor advisors or designating the DAF as a beneficiary in estate plans.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who can open a DAF?

Anyone can open a Donor Advised Fund with a minimum contribution. DAFs are a great option for people who want ease and flexibility in gifting to multiple charities without the complexity of managing a private foundation.

What assets can I put in a DAF?

Cash and publicly traded stocks, bonds, or mutual funds are the most common contributions. For other assets, please contact our team to start a conversation, and discover what's possible.

When do I receive the tax benefits?

Generally, your contributions to your DAF are tax deductible in the year they are donated.

What charities can I recommend grants to?

You can recommend grants in support of 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations and organizations that are fiscally sponsored by a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. Additionally, you can give to public agencies (schools, libraries, cemeteries, etc.), religious organizations, and federally recognized tribes within the United States.

How can I involve my family in grant recommendations?

DAF recommendations are an excellent way to engage family in philanthropy!  Often DAFs are the first vehicle for discussions around family values, and we encourage those who want to include family, friends, and trusted advisors to invite them to the conversation around what causes and charities will be supported.

What happens to my DAF when I'm gone?

As part of the process of establishing your DAF, we will explore this question and develop a plan that meets your goals.  Our discussion will help us evaluate whether you'd like your DAF to be endowed and the corresponding succession plan, and if non-endowed, where you'd like the support to go.  We will work with you to ensure your legacy is honored and that there is a clear plan for your DAF.

“With the Community Foundation it’s local, it’s better service, and it feels friendlier,”

- Jim, DAF Donor

“We have ideas, but we know that there are many other opportunities out there that we’re not necessarily aware of. Partnering with the Foundation gives us insight into real community needs and connects our DAF with local organizations making a difference.”

- Ginger, DAF Donor

“I hope that my daughter and her cousins (and their offspring) will continue to advise the fund for generations to come, and that through this process they too will understand what generosity of spirit means for a healthy community.”
