Community Foundation announces re-granting partnership with Premera Blue Cross

The Community Foundation of South Puget Sound has been selected as a recipient of a $100,000 grant from Premera Blue Cross. This one-year Premera Social Impact grant will be used to re-grant funds to nonprofit organizations in Thurston, Mason, and Lewis Counties that are doing work within Premera Social Impact’s issue areas of behavioral health and health equity.

“We are honored and excited to be selected by Premera Blue Cross to implement this grantmaking program,” said Norma Schuiteman, President and CEO of the Community Foundation of South Puget Sound. “It’s a partnership that makes sense. We can offer our knowledge, connections, and existing grantmaking infrastructure to help Premera Blue Cross ensure their grants reach small and mid-sized organizations that are making an impact locally.”

The Premera Social Impact program focuses their efforts on behavioral health issues, with an emphasis on funding programs that help historically underserved communities, including people of color and low-income populations. Community health data consistently shows disparities among these groups resulting in lower quality and access of health care services, worse health outcomes, and increased health care costs.

“Community foundations are well-positioned to identify and address their region’s problems,” said Paul Hollie, who leads Premera Social Impact. “They are embedded closer to their communities, enabling them to leave a lasting impact."

Final details about the allocation process of these additional community resources are not yet determined, but the Community Foundation expects to add this opportunity to its 2019 Community Grants process which will begin accepting applications in June.

“This grant will enhance health efforts benefitting our region and is a perfect fit with our aim to use our grantmaking to build individual and community well-being,” said Schuiteman.

The Community Foundation is involved in several other re-granting partnerships including the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Philanthropy Northwest, the Seattle Foundation, and the Marco J. Heidner Foundation.

About Premera Social Impact
Premera Blue Cross, a not-for-profit, independent licensee of the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association based in Mountlake Terrace, Wash., launched the Premera Social Impact Program aimed at supporting behavioral health issues, particularly in underserved communities. Premera, which serves Washington and Alaska, believes that overall health will improve by addressing behavioral health issues — especially for people of color and low-income populations where community health data consistently shows treatment disparities exist. By treating behavioral health, people’s physical health will improve — something that’s good for the company and good for the community.
