Building Community Pathways: Thurston ABC

A community where all individuals and families are able to live, work, meet basic needs, and prosper: that's the vision of the Thurston Asset Building Coalition (Thurston ABC).

Since 2007 Thurston ABC has convened nonprofits, businesses, and government agencies to work together to improve opportunities for people with limited incomes. More than a third of people in Thurston, Mason, and Lewis counties are struggling to make ends meet. Thurston ABC is working to establish a community advocacy agenda that’s inclusive of members across their network and focuses on supporting and identifying opportunities for all individuals and families in our region. Thurston ABC is working to establish a community advocacy agenda that’s inclusive of members across their network and focuses on supporting and identifying opportunities for all individuals and families in our region, and in turn facilitate the coordination and integration of services and service providers to improve access and support in our communities.

Thurston Asset Building Coalition engages people and organizations from across many communities in Thurston County (and beyond) in a collaborative effort that makes it possible for families to realize brighter futures. Supporting coordination and building pathways to access resources is a core belief of our Community Foundation, which is why we have provided consistent funding for Thurston ABC for   four consecutive years.

The Community Foundation recognizes that it is impossible for individual programs or siloed organizations to tackle an issue like poverty or hunger or job training all on their own. That is why the Coalition focuses on the ways in which its members can work together to create lasting change.  Thurston ABC offers collaborative learning events where members and community leaders come together for information and tools. Learning topics have included food, health, housing, economic opportunity, and the ways in which organizations can work better together to make sure every person has access to the health services and community supports they need.

We believe that this type of relationship building and shared learning is critical to the longterm success of organizations and their communities. Visit http://thurstonabc.org/ to learn more about Thurston ABC.
