10 Tips to Improve Your Scholarship Application Success

In 2010, representatives from the South Sound's three colleges spoke at a "scholarship summit"" organized by The Community Foundation. Their best advice for students seeking scholarships is outlined in the 10 tips below:

  1. Start Early! Applications, essays and letters of reference all take time.
  2. Have another person proofread all submission materials.
  3. Visit the admissions office(s) at the college(s) of your choice; or talk with one of their representatives.
  4. Ask questions!
  5. Read all application directions carefully—don’t make assumptions.
  6. Tailor your essays to the specific college/scholarship you are seeking. One size does NOT fit all.
  7. Use your essay to describe why you think you will be successful in the future
  8. If there are irregularities in your grade transcript, EXPLAIN them, e.g. our family moved across country, a close friend/relative passed away, you became very ill, etc.
  9. Help scholarship reviewers to know you as a person.
  10. Describe what you will bring to the college of your choice.
